![]() And the world of Von Bron is just as incredible, original and study worthy as Tolkein's Middle Earth. But the atmosphere is what does it for me. Not more in terms of plot, and I never really cared for the stupid ghosts. Its true that a game can be way too long than it should, but not this one. Games today have gotten so much shorter, due to everything costing more, that seeing a game like System Shock 2 is a treat. Thats why I hate Splinter Cell Conviction and other short games, because it feels like a total waste of money, and that detracts from the experience. And personally, I feel that the more hours a game can supply me, the more I like it. When was that a problem? It's long enough to me. It's beautiful, it's symbolic, and dang it, it makes me want to go there!Īnother complaint is that it's too long. But just looking at the Von Bron while listening to some of the music almost brings a tear to my eye. Sure, they both have incredible stories, with amazing plot twists. But to me personally, a space ship, is far more mysterious, awesome and original, than a space station that you wake up on, thats gone straight to hell. Not in the way that "itz gameplay and graphix are better bro", because I really like how system shock is an RPG. Ultima Underworld 2?Īlso, I'm going to say words that will probably get me yelled at and down voted, but here it goes. Sure, it drew inspiration from many places, but it was some pretty good inspiration. And since when was that a BAD thing? This game was so stylistic and original that it was just incredible. A WHOLE WORLD OF DIFFERENCE! The game drew quite a bit of inspiration from it, but not too much. Of course I have! But the difference between System Shock and System Shock 2 is. In a previous thread, after I mentioned that System Shock 2 is one of my favorite games ever made, someone asked "have you even played System shock ?". System Shock 2 is one of my favorite games ever, and all of those complaints are completely moot. How it is a carbon copy of System Shock, and how it's too long. It seems everywhere I go now, I see many people talking about how overrated System Shock 2 is. The reason why System Shock 2 fans tend to be dismissive of Bioshock is because it was CLEARLY HYPED as being the same genre when, in fact, it wasn't. * Bioshock fails miserably (and arguably doesn't even try) as the FPS/RPG hybrid that System Shock 2 was. * Bioshock is an okay FPS with great art direction, setting, and storyline. So, just to review so someone else doesn't distort my words: He oversells every little detail to an absurd amount. I'll also add this link of Ken Levine over-hyping the RPG elements. It's an okay FPS but falls flat on its ass in terms of its ARPG elements (although it has far more than Bioshock does). I hold roughly the same estimation of Borderlands. But it wasn't billed as a pure FPS and as an RPG/FPS it fails badly (and I provided a video review link of why it does so if you're curious). The 'nostalgia hater/double standard' memes are as tiresome as the 'cool to hate' memes most of you loathe so how about we drop both and actually stick to actual critiques of the game?Īs I said in my original post - in its unedited by third parties form - if you want to treat Bioshock as a pure FPS, it's fine. There's that one video out there where he parrots 'choices and consequences' half a dozen times but other than whether to save the little sisters or harvest the adam there are no real choices and consequences in the game. Moreover, as another poster above pointed out if you look at the early teaser/developer walkthroughs of Bioshock, Ken Levine hyped it as having a fair amount of RPG elements. On the latest episode of IGN's monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, Gaynor said the idea for Minerva's Den began during his interview at 2K Marin, when he was asked to pitch a level that could be slotted into the BioShock story. "I had pitched the computer core of Rapture as a thing with a guy who was splicing to become smarter and see all of the possibilities with math and stuff," he said.Again, I have no problem if people want to call Bioshock a good first person shooter. ![]() ![]() Before founding Gone Home developer Fullbright, Gaynor worked at 2K Marin on BioShock 2: Minerva's Den which is widely regarded as BioShock 2's best DLC. In an interview with IGN, developer Steve Gaynor revealed how System Shock 2 inspired the creation of Bioshock 2: Minerva's Den.
